The Beauty and the Scholar. . .
The Brides of Bath are Back! Book 5 in The Brides of Bath series.
Certain the "smart" Steffington twin is the person who can help her recover her late husband's nearly priceless stolen Chaucer manuscript, Catherine Bexley tearfully persuades the scholar to assist her. A deal is struck. She's particularly pleased that the Doctor of Letters is not interested in seducing her because she's finished with men (owing to her late husband's multitude of unfortunate alliances with. . .doxies). Regaining the manuscript and its subsequent sale will give her independence to ensure she never has to marry again.
Once he learns the poor, delicate widow is in danger of losing her heavily mortgaged home if they cannot find the valuable hologram, Dr. Melvin Steffington vows to do everything in his power to restore the rare Canterbury Tales to her. It's obvious the pretty little thing needs a man to help her. Not normally the twin to take note of pretty little things, Melvin can't help but to observe that Mrs. Bexley's physical appearance is much like the beauties so admired by his twin brother.
He hadn’t counted on the fact he would have to pose as her husband as they race against the banker's ticking clock. He hadn’t counted on the mysterious thief attempting to kill him. Most of all, he hadn't counted on how close he would become to the lovely widow or how the kissing of said widow would become the most pleasant experience in his entire seven and twenty years. . .

I read all of the Bride/s Of Bath books and thought this one would be as good as the others but I was a bit disappointed. The Hero was supposed to be the smart twin but was a little dense. He was completely clueless about life and love. I pitied the poor heroine. There was not a bit of romance which is why I read romance novels. It was downright boring. Sorry, Ms. Bolen.Product details

Love In The Library The Brides of Bath Book 5 edition by Cheryl Bolen Romance eBooks Reviews
I have read other books by Cheryl Bolen, so I had high expectations for this story. The main characters were so delightful in their conversations and their musings. The mystery of a priceless stolen manuscript drives the actions and growing attraction of Catherine and Melvin. The supporting characters were some old favorites from other books, and various types of new personalities. I highly recommend this book for your enjoyment.
This story is a total delight! I have greatly enjoyed all the books in this series, but I especially loved this one. Two very different people are brought together and unite in a search for a treasured manuscript. As they spend time together and get to know each other better, they eventually are able to recognize their love and need for one another. I loved the plot, and adored the characters.
There are very few things in this world I hate, one is finishing a good book. This one was great! Mrs. Bexley is a widow whose husband left her penniless. The only thing of value she had was a Chaucer, an original illustrated Canterbury Tales which is priceless. Unfortunately, it has been stolen. The bank is about to foreclose on her home that she dearly loves and she will have to move in with her brother who already has twelve mouths to feed. While she is at the Upper Assembly Rooms talking to Felicity Moreland, Mr. Longford, (aka Mr. Longmouth) a very wealthy man tries to talk to her. He has been in love with her since she came out nine years ago. He is such a braggart and she tries to ignore him as pleasantly as possible. She is trying to find out about the Steffington twins. Sir Elvin is a rake, Melvin is the smart one. When she learns Melvin know all about any book that has ever been written she is sure he can help her locate the missing Chaucer. He is her last chance. She begs Felicity to introduce her to Melvin but the wrong twin is there. She asks Sir Elvin for their address so she can send Melvin a note the next morning. When she finally meets Melvin she convinces him to help her locate the missing Chaucer for fifteen percent of the selling price. This will also give him independence financially from his brother. There are so many different places it could be and they have to travel for several days together. I have to stop now or I will say too much. This book has it all; adventure, mystery, jealousy and deception.
Another charming Cheryl Bolen story. The widow Mrs. Catherine Blakesly has a major issue. A valuable manuscript has been stolen and she will be penniless without it. In desperation she meets Dr. Melvin Seffington, man of letters, and persuades him to help find the manuscript. Beautiful settings, delightful period characters and a sweet HEA entertains with a delightful mystery. A bit different to many English historical romances the H is completely befuddled by women and completely "in his head" with ancient literature. No rake of a hero here. Nice for a change (though I do appreciate the comeuppance of a delectable rake).
This book was an absolute joy to read! Watching these two "romance and love is not for me" characters fall in love and the genius hero had no clue what "love felt like" so he didn't recognize it! The relationships between the twin brothers and their two sisters and indeed all the former characters from past books is just great to see and be invited into!
The people seem real complete with good intents and "warts" and all things human. It's a simple plot and the most fun is watching these two main characters is just relaxing and fun. It's so good to read a well-written book and enjoy the journey with no speed bums in the book!
I just wish I could re-read it for the first time.
I vacillated between two and three stars. The story sounded really promising. I love intelligent heroes and I did love Melvin (and although not the most exciting of names, it fit him). I wasn’t too terribly fond of Mrs. Bexley though, and thought Melvin could have done better. The premise of them working together to locate the missing Chaucer manuscript was intriguing, but for the most part, the plot was a bit boring and I thought it could possibly have been much more exciting.
Instead, Ms. Bolen used it to develop the feelings between the two main characters for each other. Not necessarily bad, since it is a romance. However, there was a lot of redundancy in the inner monologues of the characters and for being such an intelligent man, “Airy” as Mrs. Bexley called Melvin, was a bit dense when it came to recognizing his feelings for the attractive widow. As clueless as he was about woman, I would imagine most men understand when they’re attracted to someone. -)
Unfortunately, I guessed who the culprit of the theft was early on and even guessed the motivation.
It was an okay read - but nothing I will read again or possibly even remember in a month or two.
I'm a fan of Ms Bolen's writing to begin with so when I saw this available and that I hadn't read it, I had to have it. She did not disappoint. Melvin "Airy" & Catherine are a delightful couple each in their own way. Melvin AKA "Airy" is emotionally reserved, to put it mildly, and an intellectual. Ms. Bolen conveys his gradual recognition that he could possibly be in love and attached to a woman with a charming sense of humor. "Airy" while a scholarly type is not lacking as the sexy, male hero. Yes, this is a "clean" novel, but so many that claim that are poorly written and boring and this is neither. I was swept away with Airy & Catherine's story and when I got near the end I purposely did other things as I didn't want it to end. The mystery woven into the story is nicely done. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend it this delightful novel.
